Fursuit Flexi-Harness installation guide

If you plan to install a flexi-harness on a fursuit base, there are several ways to do it. It's best to do this early in the process before adding ears, foam work or padding. Regardless of your chosen method, ensure the rectangle rings are still attached, and the elastic is not twisted. If you need to, you can always remove the harness (except for the rectangle rings) and re-thread it after installation.

Please remember to use appropriate safety equipment and work in a well-ventilated area or use a proper respirator, especially if you're working with paints, primers, glues, or other hazardous supplies.

Remember to remove the basting thread (it's usually red or another high constrast colour) from the elastics before using them. This thread is just there to keep the elastics in place while they're packaged, so you won't need it once you're ready to craft!

If your base has a moving jaw, attach the side elastics just above the hinges or on the inside of the base next to them. Do not attach the side elastics directly to the hinges or jaw. Place the middle elastic on the center of the back edge of the base. The D-ring pull will hang down loose and can be used to pull down the head without the need to reach up high.​

Hot Glue - This is the easiest but least durable method. You can simply hot glue the elastic tabs to the base. If you choose this method, it's a good idea to scuff up the plastic with sandpaper or a craft knife.

Rivets - This is my preferred method when possible. Use a dab of super glue to hold the elastics in place, then drill holes for the size of rivets you are using. You can use pop rivets, hammer rivets, or chicago screws to hold the elastic securely.

Sewn - First, drill some tiny holes in the desired location. Then, use a heavy-duty thread like upholstery or nylon to sew the elastic onto the base through the holes. The sewing pattern doesn't need to be precise, but make sure to tie the starting and ending points securely. Use a thimble to avoid hurting your fingers while sewing through the elastic layers.​

Slotted - Cut or carve small slots in your base for the elastic to pass through. Thread the elastic through the slots and sew it closed flat.  This method is not recommended for thinner resin shells, or brittle materials as it may snap over time.

​Regardless of your chosen method, remember to not remove the rectangle rings! They can slip off while you are working, and you won't be able to re-attach them once the elastics are installed.

If you find that the flexi-harness has too much extra webbing after fitting, you can shorten the straps. The harness includes extra webbing to allow for fitting on a wide range of bases. Simply trim back the webbing and seal the ends with a lighter, being careful not to burn your base, foam work, or anything else you've added.
